2500 Years to Balaklava

The coin is dedicated to this ancient town situated in one of the districts of the city of Sevastopol. According to evidences of Strabon, Pliniy the Eldest and other ancient authors there was located on the  territory of the present Balaklava an ancient  settlement of Palakion (7-6th century  B.C.), in 4th century B.C. it was captured by the Greeks, in 5-th - by the Byzantines. The bay,  well sheltered from the sea by high rocks, constantly attracted attention : in 1357 the town was captured by the Genoeses who built here Chimbalo fortress; in 1457 it was captured by the Turks and since that it is called Balaklava (fish town).

Obverse: 
On the coin obverse ancient Greek trading ships are depicted, between them in the centre there is the small State Emblem of Ukraine, under which there is a two-lines inscription 5 ГРИВЕНЬ within the frame of an ornamental composition made of acanthus leaves and vines; besides there is the Mint logo of the National Bank of Ukraine. Above there is УКРАЇНА inscription, under which - 2004, the coin min year.
Reverse: 
On the coin reverse  in the upper part of the coin field the Balaklava bay is depicted; to the right - sailing ships, to the left - the coat of arms of the town of Balaklava; in the lower part of the coin field there is a column and two anchors, found during archeological excavations; above there is a semicircular inscription: 2500 РОКІВ БАЛАКЛАВІ.
