The commemorative coin is dedicated to the Year of the Dog, one of the animal-symbols of the Chinese calendar based on the twelve-year cycle of the Jupiter, the largest planet of the Solar system. Issued into circulation on January 4, 2006.
Obverse:
On the obverse of the coin, bordered by a primitivism style vegetative ornament, there are the inscriptions: УКРАЇНА / 5 / ГРИВЕНЬ (Ukraine, 5 hryvnias); above – the Small National Emblem of Ukraine with the inscription over it: НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК (National Bank), below – the year of the coin issue – 2006, the indication of metal and its fineness – Ag 925, weight in fineness – 15.55g and the logo of the National Bank of Ukraine Mint.
Reverse:
On the reverse of the coin there is a lubok-print-like depiction of a dog surrounded by conventionalized vegetative ornaments. Above and below this composition there are small silhouettes of all 12 animal symbols of the Chinese calendar; the inscriptions below say: РІК / СОБАКИ (Year of the Dog).
