Date of issue: 20 August 1996. Edge: 10 sectors of corrugation Coin devoted to 150 years of Zhambyl Zhabayev. Zhambyl Zhabayev made significant contribution to cultural and social life of Kazakhstan. "Old wise giant of national poetry Zhambyl, carrying golden spirit of genuine national creations from the middle of past centuries, from the hart of national works". (M. Auezov). He was epic poet, akyn of aitys, and poet of civil motives. Jambyl Jabayev (Kazakh: Жамбыл Жабаев) (28 February 1846 — 22 June 1945) was a Kazakhstani traditional folksinger. Many patriotic, pro-revolution and pro-Stalin poems and songs were attributed to Jambyl in the 1920s and 1930s and were widely circulated in the Soviet Union. It has been claimed that some of them were not in fact Jambyl's work and were actually written in Russia, by Russians, but labeled as translations from the Kazakh. The Kazakh city of Taraz was named after Jambyl from 1938 to 1997. Jambyl Province, in which Taraz is located, still bears his name.
