Gnevdank Monastery

This silver collector coin has been issued by the Central bank of Armenia under the international numismatic program “Armenian Monasteries and Churches” and is dedicated to Gndevank. Gndevank is a medieval monastic complex located on the left bank of Arpa River, to the west of Gndevaz village of Vayots Dzor province. The major structure of the complex, the church of St Stepanos, was built in 931-936 as commissioned by Princess Sophia of Syunik Province. Painter Yeghishe the priest watched over the construction as well as decorated interior of the church with frescos. The fresco of the Holy Mother of God is depicted on the wall of the northern sacristy. It is one of the masterpieces of Armenian late medieval art. There are khachkars and tombstones of 10th-16th centuries in the yard of the church. The dining room is also notable in the southern part of the complex with its basement, auxiliary rooms and hearth. Many old signs have been left on the walls of the Gndevank’s structures.The coin issued with colored inks.
