The coins have been issued to mark the 110th anniversary of the construction of the building that appears to be unique, both in terms of artistic conception and its new design, and the 150th anniversary of the birth of its architect Vladyslav Gorodetsky, a brilliant engineer, traveller, entrepreneur and an extraordinary person.
Built in 1902 – 1903, the House with Chimeras has a cube-like shape. It is decorated with sculptures featuring mythical motifs and hunting scenes. The exterior sculptures created by Emilio Sala were made out of cement. The building’s interior décor is designed as a sea-bed.
“This building is a unique architectural masterpiece, which has been one of the most amazing attractions in Kyiv for a long time. By putting the commemorative coins into circulation, the National Bank of Ukraine has made Kyivans and visitors to our capital a great gift for the occasion of the Day of Kyiv, which is celebrated on 25 May,” said Ms. Tamara Loshmanova, Head of the NBU Office for Numismatic Products and Marketing. She added: “The design of the commemorative coins has been chosen on the basis of a design competition. The winning coin design combined perfectly Gorodetsky’s personality and his architectural masterpiece.
