On 28 May 2013, the National Bank of Ukraine put into circulation the commemorative coin “75 Years of the Luhansk Oblast” hryvnia face value, which continues the “Oblasts of Ukraine” series.

The coin is dedicated to the region called "the eastern gate" of Ukraine, which is home to hard-working people who love their land. This region has half of Ukraine's coal reserves, fertile black soil and endless steppes. 
The coin was fabricated with making use of sophisticated bi-metal technology: outer circle – cupronickel alloy, inner circle – nordic (CuAl5Zn5Sn1), quality – “special uncirculated”, diameter – 28.0 mm, weight – 9.4 g, mintage – 20 000 pieces, edge – set of grooves.

Obverse: there is an image of the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine (above) and the following circumferential legends: НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine) (above) and П’ЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ (five hryvnias) (below); to the right there is the logo of the Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine; in the center there is an industrial landscape against the backdrop of the sun, in the foreground there is a composition consisting of a marmot, feather grass, ears of wheat and a sunflower, below this composition there is the coin issue year indication 2013.

Reverse: there is an image of the oblast’s coat of arms and the following circumferential legends: ЛУГАНСЬКА ОБЛАСТЬ (Luhansk oblast) (above), ЗАСНОВАНА 1938 РОЦІ (created in 1938) (below).

Luhansk oblast has a long history to dating back to dating back to the Paleolithic era. In the Bronze Age this territory was inhabited by the pastoral and agricultural tribes that left behind numerous burial mounds. Later, the Cimmerians, Scythians and Sarmatians and Turkic tribes settled in the region. After the Mongol invasion, the territory was barely populated and was called "The Wild Field". The new settlements in the region began to spring up in the 17th century after the national liberation war led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky had ended. Over the past 100 years, Luhansk Oblast has turned into a region with well-developed mining, production and trading infrastructure. Today it is a large industrial region.
