New Ukrainian coins Battle of the Dnieper

On 30 October 2013, the National Bank of Ukraine put into circulation the commemorative coins "Battle of the Dnieper" of 50 and 5 hryvnia face value devoted to the 70-th anniversary of liberation of Kyiv from the fascist invaders.

"The coin release is dedicated to the offensive operations carried out by the Red Army. These events brought the Battle of the Dnieper, which had turned the tide of the Great Patriotic War, to an end. In the course of the battle, Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, was liberated from the fascist invaders on November 6, 1943," noted Head of Office for Numismatic Products and Marketing Tamara Loshmanova.

Coin of 50 hryvni is made of silver 999-quality "proof". The mass of metal in purity - 500 grams, diameter - 85 mm. Circulation coin - 1.000 pcs. Edge of the coin is smooth with embossed symbols on the Periodic Table of the metal (Ag), its fineness, weight and purity of the logo of the Mint.

5 hryvni is coin made of nickel silver as a "special uncirculated", weight - 16.54 g, diameter - 35.0 mm. Circulation - 30 thousand. pcs. The edge is corrugated.

Obverse: above there is the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine with the semicircular inscription НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine); in the centre there is the composition symbolizing the victory: the figures 1943 (gilded on the silver coin) with the image of fireworks above and a laurel wreath, ribbon and star below; to the right over the star there is the coin issue year indication 2013; below there is the bow-shaped inscription: П`ЯТДЕСЯТ ГРИВЕНЬ (fifty hryvnias).

Reverse: there is a conventionalized dynamic composition consisting of the images of an offensive combat wherein different arms participate - tanks, infantry, artillery, aviation, Dnieper Military Flotilla and so on; the mirror-finished part of the reverse symbolizes the Dnieper river; above there is the inscription БИТВА / ЗА ДНІПРО (Battle / of the Dnieper).

Having defeated 60 divisions of the Army Group South and Army Group Center, the Soviet troops inflicted heavy losses on the German Army at the Battle of the Dnieper. Over 38 thousand small towns and villages were liberated from the fascist invaders. Successful offensives opened new strategic prospects for the Red Army. The military campaign on the Dnieper River had ended by the end of 1943. Mass heroism was exhibited by the Soviet people in this military campaign. The soldiers, guerrillas, members of the underground fought side by side against the enemy. For their courage and heroism, 17.5 thousand liberation warriors were awarded with orders and medals, of which 2, 438 warriors were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
