New Ukrainian coin Mykola Amosov

On 26 November 2013, the National Bank of Ukraine put into circulation the commemorative coin "Mykola Amosov".

The presentation of this commemorative coin, held at the Museum of Money of the National Bank of Ukraine, was attended by the Correspondent Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, chair of the sub-faculty of internal medicine No 2 at O. Bohomolets National University of Medicine Kateryna Amosova, Deputy Head of the Office for Numismatic Products and Marketing of the National Bank of Ukraine Viktoriia Suzanska, and the authors of the coin’s design: designers Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk, Nataliia Fandikova and engraver Roman Chaikovskyi.

According to Ms Viktoriia Suzanska, the commemorative coin Mykola Amosov represents a continuation of the Outstanding Personalities of Ukraine series and is dedicated to the talented scientist and famous surgeon Mykola Amosov.

"Mykola Amosov saved life of many people. His achievements in medicine and biocybernetics, works of literature and social essays have been highly appreciated by both the contemporaries and the later generations. Our coin is a tribute to the many talents of the great surgeon who dedicated his life to preservation of physical and mental health of the mankind," said Ms Viktoriia Suzanska.

In addition, she said that the Mykola Amosov coin of 5 hryvnia face value was made from 925-fine silver, weight in fineness: 15.55 g, mintage: 5,000 pieces.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Kateryna Amosova, daughter of Mykola Amosov – a scientist, public figure, writer, academician of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, the founder and director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery – thanked the National Bank of Ukraine for high appreciation of his achievements and said: "My father believed that the most important thing is to work and be a human. A person of high moral principles, conscientious and responsible for the job his does. And he was just like that. He lived to respect himself. I am confident that these principles helped him leave the historical legacy which the National Bank of Ukraine so deservedly marked today by dedicating this coin to the 100th anniversary of Mykola Amosov’s birthday".

Serhii Kharuk has expressed the common opinion of all authors who worked on the coin design: "We had no doubts as to what exactly has to be depicted on the coin dedicated to the outstanding heart surgeon. The coin observes bears a conventionalized image of the electrocardiogram featuring the heart in the center, and the reverse bears his portrait. Every one of us was very diligent and thorough about his work, just like Mykola Amosov was treating his every patient. We hope that the Ukrainians will like this coin and that it will remind them about the legendary surgeon".

Obverse: above there is the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine with the semicircular inscription НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine); in the centre there is depicted the heart surrounded by a conventionalized image of the electrocardiogram; to the right there is the coin issue year indication 2013 and below - the semicircular face value П`ЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ (five hryvnias).

Reverse: bears Mykola Amosov`s portrait; above there is the inscription МИКОЛА АМОСОВ (Mykola Amosov), to the left - years of his life 1913/2002.
