New Ukrainian coin 60 Years of the Cherkasy Oblast

On January 3rd 2014, the National Bank of Ukraine put into circulation the commemorative coin “60 Years of the Cherkasy Oblast” 5 hryvnia face value, which continues the “Oblasts of Ukraine” series.

The commemorative coin is dedicated to the picturesque Cossack land on the Dnieper River banks, the birthplace of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi and Taras Shevchenko. This Oblast having a strong economic potential is famous for its chernozem (black earth) as well as for its multicoloured rushnyks (embroidered towels) and is often named `the Heart of Ukraine`.

The coin was fabricated with making use of sophisticated bi-metal technology: outer circle – cupronickel alloy, inner circle – nordic (CuAl5Zn5Sn1), quality – “special uncirculated”, diameter – 28.0 mm, weight – 9.4 g, mintage – 20 000 pieces, edge – set of grooves.

Obverse:
bears the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine (above) with the semicircular inscriptions НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine) above and П`ЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ (five hryvnias) beneath; to the right there is the mark of the National Bank of Ukraine Mint; in the center there are depicted the church in the village of Subotiv, gazebo in the Sofiivka Park, kobza and wheatears; over them there is indicated the coin issue year 2014.
 
Reverse:
bears the Oblast coat of arms with the semicircular inscriptions: ЧЕРКАСЬКА ОБЛАСТЬ (Cherkasy Oblast) above and ЗАСНОВАНА У 1954 РОЦІ (established in 1954 year) below.
