On February 25, 2014, the National Bank of Ukraine put the commemorative coin "Yevhen Berezniak" of 2 hryvnia face value into circulation.
Ms Tamara Loshmanova, Head of Numismatic Production and Marketing Department of the National Bank of Ukraine, has said that the coin represents a continuation of the Outstanding Personalities of Ukraine series and is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yevhen Berezniak, Hero of Ukraine, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, an intelligence officer, and a liberator of the city of Cracow (the Republic of Poland) from the fascist invaders.
“By issuing the commemorative coin in honour of Yevhen Berezniak, the National Bank of Ukraine commemorates the heroic deed performed by Yevhen Berezniak when he was on a special mission in the enemy's rear during the Great Patriotic War (1941 – 1945), ” noted Ms Tamara Loshmanova, adding that Yevhen Berezniak had been the Chief of Intelligence of the First Ukrainian Front,
He was the prototype for the legendary hero from the novel Major Vykhor on which the film of the same name was based.
She has said that the obverse of the coin features a conventionalized image of the cathedral's towers and buildings in Cracow (in the centre) , the reverse of the coin bears a portrait of Yevhen Berezniak against the background the conventionalized map of the Polish city and inscriptions: Євгеній Березняк (Yevhen Berezniak with indication of the years of his life “1914 – 2013”, “Password Dum Spiro” (the title of the novel by Yevhen Berezniak devoted to the liberation of Cracow during World War II).
The coin is made from German silver, quality− “special uncirculated”, weight – 12.8 G, diameter – 31.0 mm, mintage – 20,000 pieces. The coin edge is grooved.
The coin has been created by a team of designers and engravers: Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk, Roman Caikovskyi, and Volodymyr Atamanchuk.
