New Ukrainian coins 220 Years of the City of Odessa

The National Bank of Ukraine has put into circulation the commemorative coins “220 Years of the City of Odessa” of 10 and 5 hryvnia face value.

Commemorative coins are dedicated to one of the leading industrial, scientific and cultural centers of our country, to the hero city of Odessa, often called the southern sea-gate of Ukraine, a pearl of great worth on the Black Sea shore. The territory of the city of our time had been populated in days gone by; here existed ancient settlements of different tribes and peoples, and at the end of the 18th century the port and the city came into existence on the place of the town of Hadzhibey.

The coin of 10 hryvnia face value has been made of silver; quality – “proof”, weight in fineness – 31.1 g, diameter – 38.6 mm, mintage – 3 000 pieces. The coin edge is smooth with in-depth legends: Ag 925 (metal and fineness), 31.1 (weight in fineness), NBU Mint logo.

The coin of 5 hryvnia face value has been made of German silver; quality – “special uncirculated”, weight– 16.54 g, diameter – 35.0 mm, mintage – 30 000 pieces. The coin edge is grooved.

On the obverse there are depicted: above - the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine with the semicircular inscription НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine); to the left - the coin issue year indication 2014; the conventionalized composition representing the monument to the Duc de Richelieu against the background of the Potemkin Stairs (to the right), Odesa National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet (to the left) with the conventionalized image of waves thereunder; below - the coin face value: 10/ГРИВЕНЬ (10/hryvnias) or 5/ГРИВЕНЬ (5/hryvnias) on the German silver one.

On the reverse of the coins there are depicted: a fragment of the panorama of the Odessa bay and city from the 19th century lithography with the image of the sailing-vessel in the foreground; the Coat of Arms of Odessa to the left with the inscriptions: 1794 over it and ОДЕСА (Odessa) to the right.

The commemorative coins are a legal tender of Ukraine and shall be accepted without any restrictions at their face values for all types of payments as well as for placing to the settlement accounts, on deposits, for letters of credit and transfers.
