The National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan announces the issue, effective from 12 September 2014, of the commemorative coins “200th Anniversary of Taras Shevchenko" – a silver coin of “proof” quality of the nominal value of KZT 500 and a coin made of nickel-silver of the nominal value of KZT 50.
Taras Shevchenko was a famous Kobza player, poet, prose writer, and artist. The city of Aktau bore his name for a time. Today the city of Fort Shevchenko in Mangistau region of Kazakhstan, which is located on the Mangyshlak peninsula (Cape Tyubkaragan), bears this name.
"200th Anniversary of Taras Shevchenko” silver coin and coin made of nickel-silver have identical images on the faces and reverses. Image on the silver coin of “proof” is placed on the mirrored surface.
An image of the state emblem of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the central part, composed with Kazakh and Ukrainian ornaments; face value of the coin ((“500” on the silver coin and “50” on a silver-nickel coin) and inscription «ТЕҢГЕ» in the lower sector; elements of national ornament, secularly represented at the left and right parts; inscriptions «ҚАЗАҚСТАН РЕСПУБЛИКАСЫ» in state language and «РЕСПУБЛИКА КАЗАХСТАН» in Russian along the circumferences; protruding edge along the circumference.
On the back side (reverse) of the coin, an image of Taras Shevchenko and two Ukrainian ornamental inserts; inscriptions «ТАРАС ШЕВЧЕНКО» in Russian and «200 ЖЫЛ/РОКIВ» in state and Ukrainian languages; «2014» at the upper sector means year of coinage; protruding edge along the circumference. An inscription on the silver coin «Ag 925 31,1 g» means metal, standard of coinage and weight.
The images and legends on the obverse and reverse of the coins are relief. The commemorative coins are made of:
1) sterling silver, weight – 31.1 gram, diameter - 38,61 mm, quality of manufacture – “proof”, mintage - 3 thousand, lateral surface (gurt) is grooved;
2) nickel-silver alloy, diameter - 31 mm, weight – 11.17 gram, mintage – 100 thousand, lateral surface (gurt) is grooved.
Commemorative coins of the nominal value of KZT 500 and 50 are mandatory for acceptance at their face value throughout the Republic of Kazakhstan for all types of payments as well as for credit to the accounts, placement on deposits, for letters of credit and for money transfers; they are changed and exchanged without limitation in all banks of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
