New Ukrainian coin 75 Years of the Lviv Oblast

On November 25th 2014, the National Bank of Ukraine put into circulation the commemorative coin “75 Years of the Lviv Oblast” 5 hryvnia face value, which continues the “Oblasts of Ukraine” series.

The coin was fabricated with making use of sophisticated bi-metal technology: outer circle – cupronickel alloy, inner circle – nordic (CuAl5Zn5Sn1), quality – “special uncirculated”, diameter – 28.0 mm, weight – 9.4 g, mintage – 20 000 pieces, edge – set of grooves.

The coin is dedicated to one of the largest cultural, educational, industrial and agrarian regions on the west of Ukraine. L`vivshchyna is a substantial European road junction. It is the land of the main European watershed separating the drainage basins of the Baltic and Black Seas, and innumerable resources of healing mineral waters form a special wealth of the historical land of Halych. In the Oblast there are situated the following well-known health resorts: Truskavets, Morshyn, Shklo, Nemyriv, Skhidnytsia.

Obverse: bears the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine (above) with the semicircular inscriptions НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine) above and П`ЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ (five hryvnias) beneath; to the right there is the mark of the National Bank of Ukraine Mint; in the center there is the conventionalized composition: the images of the `Apostolos` (Acts and Epistles) book, the first book printed in Ukraine (Lviv, 1574), with the coin issue year indication 2014 to the left thereof, and, against the background of mountains, a mineral water pump room, the Olesko Castle, oil well pumpjack and the cezve with a cup (beneath).

Reverse: bears the Oblast coat of arms with the semicircular inscriptions: ЛЬВІВСЬКА ОБЛАСТЬ (Lviv Oblast) above and ЗАСНОВАНА У 1939 РОЦІ (established in 1939 year) below.
