“The arrival of the euro to Lithuania is marking a new step in the development of our national numismatics. The depicting of the coat-of-arms of the Lithuanian State — the Vytis — or its figure on coins has been a tradition fostered in Lithuanian minting for already more than six hundred years. The euro opens wide expanses to make known around the world this symbol of the Lithuanian State, so dear to us,” says the Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania, in presenting the new sets.
The set will consist of 8 coins. 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 euro cent, 1 and 2 euro. The set’s case is illustrated with images of various ancient Lithuanian coins with the Vytis, from the Bank of Lithuania Money Museum.
There are two types of numismatic sets. One of them has euro and euro cent coins with a glossy plane and relief surface (quality BU). The mintage of this set — 35 thousand units. The smaller — 7 thousand unit mintage — issues a proof-quality set with a coloured commemorative sign, dedicated to the euro adoption in Lithuania. The surface of the coins in this set — mirror, while their relief is matt.
The coins were minted by the UAB Lietuvos monetų kalykla (Lithuanian Mint).
Earlier the Bank of Lithuania had issued twelve numismatic sets of circulation litas coins: in 1991, 2000, 2003, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
