National Bank of Kazakhstan has released "Abai" commemorative coins under Portraits on the Banknotes coin series on August 14th 2015.

A portrait of the Kazakh educator and thinker Abai was depicted on the obverse of the 20 tenge banknote of 1993. Currently the banknote is withdrawn from circulation.

Abay (Ibrahim) Qunanbayuli (Kazakh: Абай (Ибраһим) Құнанбайұлы (August 10, 1845 – July 6, 1904) was a great Kazakh poet, composer and philosopher. He was also a cultural reformer toward European and Russian cultures on the basis of enlightened Islam.

50 tenge nickel silver coin.

Face value: 50 tenge;
Diameter – 31 mm, thickness – 2 mm, weight – 11,17 gram;
Mintage: 100 000 pcs.

Obverse: an image of the state emblem of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the central part; face value of the coin «50», and inscription «ТЕҢГЕ» at lower sector; inscriptions «ҚАЗАҚСТАН РЕСПУБЛИКАСЫ»  in state language and «РЕСПУБЛИКА КАЗАХСТАН» in Russian along the circumference; protruding edge along the circumference.

Reverse:In the center of the coin is a fragment of the front of the 20 tenge banknote, which features a portrait of Abai; inscription "АБАЙ" in Kazakh, the number "2015", which indicates the year of coinage, and banknote’s graphic elements are along the circumference; protruding rim along the circumference.

500 tenge silver coin.

Face value: 500 tenge;
Quality: proof, metal - silver 0.925;
Diameter – 38.61 mm, weight – 31,1 gram;
Mintage: 3000 pcs.
