Saint George (ca. 275/281 – 23 April 303) was, according to tradition, a Roman soldier in the Guard of Diocletian, who is venerated as a Christian martyr. In hagiography Saint George is one of the most venerated saints in the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodox Church, and the Eastern Catholic Churches. He is immortalized in the tale of Saint George and the Dragon and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. His memorial is celebrated on 23 April, and he is regarded as one of the most prominent military saints. The Monastery of the Virgin - Gelati near Kutaisi (Imereti region of Western Georgia) was founded by the King of Georgia David the Builder (1089-1125) in 1106.

Saint George riding the lion, 11th century silver plate gilded with gold from the Gelati Monastery. The denomination numeral “10” on the right hand of the coin, and the legend “თეთრი” (tetri) underneath. The edge of the coin is circled with a plant ornament.
Reverse: 
The Borjgali (a Georgian symbol of the Sun with seven rotating wings) over the Christian Tree of Life, and the date of mintage, “1993”, with Georgian and English marginal legends on it, “საქართველოს რესპუბლიკა” and “REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA”.
