Uzeir Hajibekov (Uzeyir Hajibeyov)

This coin was issued to celebrate Azerbaijan’s great composer Uzeir Hajibekov. Great Azerbaijan composer Uzeir Hajibekov was musicologist, publicist, dramatist, pedagogue and public figure. He was born in the ancient city of Shusha, the cradle of the Azerbaijan culture. He founded the modern Azerbaijan Professional music art and the national opera. In 1908, he composed the first opera in the Muslim East “Leyli and Madjnun”.

Uzeyir bey Abdul Hussein oglu Hajibeyov (Azerbaijani: Üzeyir bəy Əbdülhüseyn oğlu Hacıbəyov; Russian: Узеир Абдул-Гусейн оглы Гаджибеков; September 18, 1885, Agjabadi – November 23, 1948, Baku) was an Azerbaijani and Soviet composer, conductor, scientist, publicist, playwright, teacher, translator, and social figure. He is recognized as the father of Azerbaijani classical music and opera. Uzeyir Hajibeyov composed music for the national anthem of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (also the anthem of the modern Republic of Azerbaijan) as well as the state anthem of Azerbaijan SSR.
