In 1998, the Republic of Belarus, together with the world community, observed the 200–th birthday of Adam Mitskevich, a great poet of Belarusian decent, whose works had a tremendous impact on the development of Belarusian literature. Being the founder of revolutionary romanticism in Polish literature, Adam Mitskevich had close ties with his native land – Belarus. He highly valued folklore, described hard everyday life of ordinary people, calling the Belarusian language "...the most harmonic and the least changed language compared with other Slavonic languages". His works reflect themes and personages suggested by life and history of Belarusian people.
