This silver commemorative coin depicting Fore-Asian Leopard has been issued by the Central Bank of Armenia under the International Program "Wild World of Caucasus". The Program includes animals that are protected under the Red Book of Armenia. The area of settlement of Fore-Asian Leopard is the South of Armenia - sparse juniper forests and rich cliffy massifs starting from Garni site of Khosrov reserve to the river Araks, towards the border of Iran. A number of Fore-Asian Leopard all over Armenia does not exceed 10-20 species. Since 1972 hunting for this animal has been officially prohibited. It is protected in the Khosrov reserve and the "Sevan" National Park. The Anatolian leopard (Panthera pardus tulliana) was once described as a distinct subspecies of leopard native to Anatolia (Asia Minor), Turkey. However, modern taxonomic analyses have demonstrated that the leopards of Asia Minor genetically differ little from other west- and central Asian leopards and should therefore be included into the Persian leopard (Panthera pardus saxicolor) subspecies. It is unknown whether any leopards still exist in the wild in Anatolia.
